The Why
Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) have a promising future. STEM occupations paid more than double that of non-STEM occupations, and those jobs are expected to grow rapidly through 2030. STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st-century skills and those extend beyond those needed to be successful in STEM fields.
A section of our community, mostly the people of color and economically weaker section of the society, is vastly underrepresented in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Lack of diversity in STEM occupation is a systemic problem and its reason includes little parental and societal support for STEM education, systemic bias, discrimination, and lack of an inclusive environment.
We can help by building a STEM culture within the section of the community historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math education. We hope to enable and empower young minds so that they love and embrace STEM education, innovate new ideas and be role models for others in our community. That is why You Are Amazing was founded.
STEM is for everyone and that is what we want to prove!
The How
Since we are a small group of young high schoolers, we are currently focusing on impacting and motivating middle and elementary school students (typically grade 4-8) in our own little neighborhoods in Edison and Woodbridge townships and adjoining areas in the state of New Jersey. We also welcome students from Central and Northern New Jersey for online instructions. We organize periodic tutoring sessions, monthly motivational mentoring talks, and fun Inspire STEM courses to motivate young souls, who usually don't have exposure to STEM, for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We will work together to improve children's interest in and attitudes about STEM, develop a STEM identity and new possible futures, make STEM relevant to their life, and improve socio-emotional learning.
